Georg Jensen is a world renowned Danish brand that has been at the forefront of the luxury industry for over 100 years. Since his death in 1935, Georg Jensen’s eponymous brand has continued his original ethos of maintaining the craftsmanship behind every design.
Jensen, the very heart of the brand, originally trained as a sculptor and inspired by the spirit of innovation and artistic invention he set out to forge a new direction in silver design. He established the company in 1904 and began selling his creations of silver hollowware, cutlery and fine jewellery from his quaint shop in central Copenhagen.
Influenced by the magical landscape of his childhood surroundings he drew inspiration for his creations from nature. Seeing fantasy and fairy-tale in the everyday he designed works of art that were as practical as they were decorative. Always possessing a global vision, Jensen understood the importance of showcasing his products on the world stage. At the Pan Pacific Exposition in 1915 American media magnate William Randolph Hearst purchased Jensen’s full body of work, the rest as they say is history.
Internationally acclaimed, Patricia Urquiola is a designer known for her innovation and experimentation. Especially known for her work with surfaces, textures and colours she brings these references to the Urkiola collection with wonderful results. Georg Jensen’s Urkiola collection is recognisable by its contrasted design along with references to the brand’s archives, especially the cylindrical shapes of the ‘50s and ‘60s. The Bernadotte cutlery pattern, from 1939, features ribbing similar to that which Urquiola uses in this latest collection. She was excited about the possibility of bringing crisper, stricter, simpler lines to Georg Jensen stainless steel, a stark contrast to the existing fluid, organic shapes.
Born in 1866 in Raadvaad, a small settlement north of Copenhagen, Denmark, Georg Jensen was a silversmith and sculpture ahead of his time in both trade and skill. Discovering his call in life at an early age, he completed is training as a sculptor in 1892 at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Georg spent the years after this accomplishment honing his craft whilst travelling the world, first working with ceramics before moving turning to silver in 1904. It wasn’t long after this discovery that he opened his own forge in central Copenhagen where he mastered his profession and began to gain widespread recognition for his expertly crafted art deco jewellery.
On the back of this success, Georg opened stores across Europe including Stockholm, Berlin, Paris and London and in 1924 the very first US store opened in New York. Georg Jensen continued to build the legacy of the globally celebrated brand until his death in 1935 and it has continued to blossom and grow in the many years since.
